Description
AudioByte SuperVOX Multibit DSD DAC
AudioByte SuperVOX: A New Approach to High-End Digital-to-Analogue Conversion.
The AudioByte SuperVOX is a sophisticated high-end digital-to-analogue converter featuring a proprietary multibit Delta-Sigma conversion architecture, powerful FPGA processing, advanced clock management and a fully balanced discrete analogue output stage.
Rather than using a conventional off-the-shelf DAC chip or a traditional R2R resistor ladder, AudioByte developed a unique multi-level conversion system designed to combine exceptional technical performance with a natural and engaging musical presentation.
Built around an AMD Artix-7 FPGA, the AudioByte SuperVOX employs a fifth-order, 33-level Delta-Sigma modulator with 36-bit internal precision, operating at high sampling frequencies.
With USB, I2S and S/PDIF digital inputs, balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs, selectable reconstruction filters and an integrated linear power supply, the SuperVOX is designed to perform as the digital heart of a reference-quality music system.
Available from Chameleon Audio for €3,700.
AudioByte SuperVOX – Beyond Conventional DAC Technology
The AudioByte SuperVOX takes a distinctive approach to digital-to-analogue conversion.
Many DACs are built around commercially available integrated converter chips. Others employ discrete resistor ladders, commonly described as R2R architectures.
The SuperVOX follows a different path, using custom FPGA programming and a multi-level Delta-Sigma conversion engine.
This architecture allows AudioByte to develop its own modulation algorithms, element-selection strategies and signal reconstruction techniques.
The purpose is not simply to achieve impressive laboratory specifications but to provide accurate digital conversion with a carefully engineered relationship between timing, noise, distortion and analogue output performance.
Proprietary Multibit Delta-Sigma Conversion
The core of the AudioByte SuperVOX is its proprietary multibit Delta-Sigma architecture.
The manufacturer specifies a fifth-order, 33-level Delta-Sigma modulator with 36-bit precision, operating at approximately 11.28MHz or 12.28MHz depending on the relevant sampling-rate family.
Unlike conventional single-bit approaches, multi-level conversion employs multiple output states as part of the digital-to-analogue conversion process.
The SuperVOX uses carefully controlled arrays of equal-value elements together with dedicated error-management algorithms.
Although some of these arrays can resemble resistor-ladder structures, the manufacturer explicitly distinguishes the design from a conventional R2R DAC.
The resulting architecture represents AudioByte’s own interpretation of high-performance multibit conversion.
AMD Artix-7 FPGA Processing
The AudioByte SuperVOX uses an AMD Artix-7 FPGA as the central platform for its proprietary digital audio processing.
FPGA technology allows AudioByte to implement specialised hardware logic developed specifically for audio conversion.
Rather than relying entirely on a fixed commercial DAC chip architecture, the manufacturer can design the modulation, signal management and filtering algorithms around its own technical objectives.
The FPGA is an essential part of the SuperVOX’s conversion process and its distinctive engineering identity.
Intersymbol Interference Mitigation
A major focus of the SuperVOX design is AudioByte’s proprietary approach to intersymbol interference mitigation.
In digital conversion systems, the relationship between successive samples and the behaviour of reconstruction circuitry influence how accurately the original signal is reproduced.
AudioByte developed custom hardware and element-selection techniques intended to reduce unwanted interactions during conversion.
The company’s implementation combines specialised switching arrays and error-management strategies to minimise distortion mechanisms while preserving low-level musical information.
These methods form a central part of the SuperVOX’s proprietary conversion architecture.
Dual-Loop Element Error Mitigation
The manufacturer specifies a dual-loop element-error mitigation system.
This technique combines noise-shaped selection patterns with minimum-activity switching strategies.
Its purpose is to manage the errors that can occur when multiple physical conversion elements do not behave identically.
By controlling the selection and activity of these elements, the conversion architecture aims to improve accuracy and reduce unwanted noise and distortion.
This specialised technique helps distinguish the AudioByte SuperVOX from a conventional chip-based DAC.
Fully Balanced Digital-to-Analogue Architecture
The AudioByte SuperVOX is designed around a fully balanced architecture.
Balanced signal processing is used throughout the conversion system, followed by a discrete analogue output stage.
The unit offers both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analogue connections, making it suitable for integration with a broad selection of high-end amplifiers and preamplifiers.
For systems equipped with balanced analogue inputs, the XLR outputs provide a convenient connection option.
The final performance of a complete system will depend on the receiving equipment, gain structure and cable installation.
Discrete Analogue Output Stage
After digital-to-analogue conversion, the signal passes through a dedicated discrete analogue output stage.
AudioByte developed this circuit to complement the characteristics of its proprietary conversion engine.
The output architecture is intended to preserve transparency and fine musical information while providing the necessary signal interface to downstream audio electronics.
The SuperVOX provides balanced XLR and RCA analogue outputs with a manufacturer-specified maximum output amplitude of 2.9V RMS.
This output level should be considered when matching the DAC to a preamplifier, integrated amplifier or power amplifier.
Advanced FemtoVOX Clock Management
Clock accuracy plays an important role in digital audio conversion.
The AudioByte SuperVOX incorporates the company’s advanced FemtoVOX clock management system, developed to maintain precise timing within the conversion process.
Accurate internal timing and effective management of incoming digital audio help establish stable conditions for high-quality digital-to-analogue conversion.
The manufacturer combines this clock technology with its dedicated FPGA architecture and signal-processing algorithms.
Actual jitter performance within a complete system also depends on the selected digital interface and the connected source.
Three Selectable Digital Filters
The SuperVOX offers three digital reconstruction filter options:
- Minimum Phase
- Hybrid Phase
- Linear Phase
Each filter employs a different approach to the timing and frequency-domain behaviour of digital signal reconstruction.
These options allow listeners to experiment with the relationship between the DAC’s filtering characteristics and the presentation of recordings.
There is no universal filter setting that is necessarily preferable for every system or listener.
The ability to select filters is particularly useful when fine-tuning the SuperVOX within a revealing high-end system.
Precision Digital Volume Control
The AudioByte SuperVOX includes a bypassable high-precision digital volume control.
The manufacturer specifies 256 adjustment steps with 0.5dB attenuation increments.
This allows the output level to be adjusted electronically when required by the system configuration.
For users who prefer an external preamplifier or an integrated amplifier with its own volume control, the digital attenuation function can be bypassed.
When connecting directly to a power amplifier, the user should confirm appropriate gain matching, safe startup behaviour and volume-control settings before playback.
The SuperVOX should not automatically be considered a complete replacement for every dedicated analogue preamplifier.
USB Digital Audio Input
The SuperVOX includes a USB Type-B digital audio input for connection to a compatible computer, streamer or digital audio transport.
USB provides a convenient digital connection for systems using software-based music playback and compatible USB audio sources.
As with any high-performance digital component, the supported audio formats and resolutions should be checked against the current firmware and source configuration.
Native I2S Input over HDMI
One of the most important connections on the AudioByte SuperVOX is its I2S input using an HDMI-style LVDS interface.
I2S is a digital audio interface carrying audio data and associated timing signals over dedicated electrical connections.
It is particularly relevant when connecting the SuperVOX to the matching AudioByte SuperHUB network streamer and digital processor.
The I2S connection can provide a dedicated pathway for high-resolution audio, including processed digital signals from a compatible transport.
Important: An HDMI-style connector used for I2S audio is not a conventional HDMI television connection. I2S pin configurations vary between manufacturers, so compatibility must be verified before connecting third-party equipment.
Coaxial S/PDIF Digital Input
The AudioByte SuperVOX also includes a coaxial S/PDIF digital input.
This allows connection to compatible CD transports, network audio players and other digital sources equipped with a suitable coaxial output.
The S/PDIF input provides a practical option for integrating the SuperVOX into an existing digital audio system without requiring a dedicated I2S source.
AudioByte SuperVOX and SuperHUB: The Ideal Digital Partnership
The SuperVOX was designed as part of AudioByte’s advanced digital audio ecosystem.
Its natural partner is the AudioByte SuperHUB Network Streamer and Digital Transport.
The SuperHUB provides network streaming, digital input management, FPGA-based upsampling, format conversion and reclocking, while the SuperVOX focuses on the final digital-to-analogue conversion process.
Connected through their compatible I2S interfaces, the two components create a flexible digital playback system with separate transport and conversion functions.
This arrangement allows the digital front end to be developed around two purpose-designed components rather than an all-in-one solution.
Both products can also be used independently with other suitable digital audio equipment.
