A Different Approach to Digital Audio

The Holo Audio Spring 3 DAC represents the third generation of Holo Audio’s celebrated Spring series, developed around the engineering philosophy of designer Jeff Zhu.

Unlike conventional digital-to-analog converters built around integrated DAC chips, the Spring 3 employs a proprietary, fully discrete resistor-ladder architecture. Its specially developed converter modules implement independent conversion approaches for PCM and DSD, providing native processing without first converting DSD into PCM.

Drawing on technologies developed for the flagship May DAC, the Spring 3 incorporates advanced linear compensation, de-glitch processing, PLL and FIFO-based jitter management, together with a discrete Class A analog output stage.

The result is a converter engineered for remarkable precision while preserving the musical flow, spatial information and tonal complexity that make exceptional digital playback so convincing.

PRECISION INSIDE

Discrete R2R Technology & Linear Compensation

The Spring 3’s PCM converter is constructed from precision resistor networks rather than a mass-produced integrated conversion chip. In a discrete R2R architecture, resistor accuracy and switching behaviour are fundamental to conversion performance.

Holo Audio addresses these challenges through proprietary linear compensation circuitry. An additional digitally controlled resistor network compensates for inaccuracies in the primary ladder, with a stated equivalent accuracy of up to 0.00005%.

Advanced de-glitch processing further reduces switching-related artifacts, while a carefully engineered analog output stage preserves the integrity of the converted signal.

For DSD, the Spring 3 uses a separate discrete resistor-ladder architecture optimized specifically for that format, enabling native DSD conversion rather than an intermediate PCM conversion stage.

THREE LEVELS OF REFINEMENT

KTE, Level 2 or Level 1?

All Spring 3 versions share the same underlying design philosophy and discrete conversion architecture. The differences are found principally in their component selection, power supply implementation, USB interface and finishing details.

OPTIONAL FACTORY UPGRADE

Fully Balanced Analog Preamplifier Module

The Spring 3 is available with an optional factory-installed analog preamplifier module, allowing it to function as a digital-source preamplifier when connected directly to a power amplifier or suitable active loudspeakers.

The module features a fully balanced, discrete analog design with 84 volume steps in 1dB increments. It provides a versatile solution for listeners who want to simplify a digital-only playback system.

Important: The preamplifier option does not add analog inputs. A turntable, phono stage or other analog source still requires a separate preamplifier with appropriate analog connectivity. The module must be specified when ordering and is factory installed.

Holo Audio continues to maintain official software resources for its digital products. A Windows 10/11 USB driver version 6.14.0, dated March 20, 2026, is listed in the manufacturer’s official download resources.
