New Transformer Design

Phasemation reviewed the complete transformer manufacturing process, including more precise control of wire tension during winding. The objective was to improve expressive capability, signal purity and the reproduction of subtle musical information.

This careful transformer construction allows the very low-level output of an MC cartridge to be increased to a level suitable for an MM phono stage while maintaining the natural character of the original signal.

Balanced and Unbalanced Connections

One of the major improvements over the previous T-550 is the ability to select between balanced and unbalanced inputs.

The T-600 provides both XLR balanced and RCA unbalanced input and output connections. Neutrik XLR connectors are employed, while the RCA terminals are gold-plated.

This flexibility allows the T-600 to integrate easily into both conventional RCA-based analogue systems and fully balanced phono installations.

PASS Mode for MM and High-Output MC Cartridges

The T-600 introduces a useful PASS mode, allowing cartridges that do not require transformer step-up to remain connected without changing cables.

When PASS is selected, an MM cartridge or a high-output MC cartridge can be routed through the unit without transformer gain.

This makes the T-600 particularly convenient for systems using more than one cartridge or tonearm, allowing easier switching between low-output MC, MM and high-output MC cartridges.

Why Use an MC Step-Up Transformer?

A low-output moving-coil cartridge produces an extremely small electrical signal. Before this signal can be processed by a conventional MM phono stage, it must be increased to a suitable level.

An MC step-up transformer performs this task passively through magnetic coupling rather than active electronic amplification.

The Phasemation T-600 therefore provides both voltage gain and impedance transformation without requiring its own power supply. This passive approach can be especially attractive in high-end analogue systems where low noise, simplicity and preservation of musical information are priorities.

Wide Cartridge Compatibility

The T-600 is designed for MC cartridges with an output impedance between 1.5Ω and 40Ω, making it compatible with a wide range of moving-coil designs.

Its recommended load impedance is 47kΩ, allowing the transformer output to be connected directly to the MM input of a suitable phono amplifier.

The fixed 26dB step-up ratio provides substantial passive gain while maintaining a simple and direct analogue signal path.
