Description
OLIO SPEC Canarino Bridge DUB – Unlock A New Audio Experience Through the Diretta Protocol
By simply connecting a USB DAC to the Diretta Target and turning on the power, the system will start up and operate as a Diretta Target. Since it is a dedicated device, no hardware settings are required.
The new audio transmission technology “Diretta” still has limited equipment that can actually benefit from it. However, by using this bridge, you can easily use it as a Diretta Target (receiver) by connecting a USB DAC.
The Canarino Bridge DUB is a cutting-edge audio device designed to optimize the performance of your USB DAC. By seamlessly integrating with the Diretta protocol, this compact and efficient bridge delivers exceptional sound quality by eliminating potential noise and interference commonly associated with direct USB connections.
Experience a new level of audio clarity and precision as the Canarino Bridge DUB unlocks the full potential of your digital audio components. Its dedicated hardware platform ensures optimal performance and compatibility, making it an essential addition for audio enthusiasts seeking to elevate their listening experience.
The Build & Components
The main board it incorporates is the newly developed Diretta Lucia Piccolo. This is the first product in the world to feature this latest module. You can consider the latest version a simplification and basic version of the high-end range Diretta Lucia (adopted by SPEC’s RMP-UB1). With this hardware configuration, the “Canarino Bridge DUB” has transformed into a “pure Diretta Target/USB Bridge appliance,” similar to SPEC’s RMP-UB1, and fundamentally differs from the previous model, the Diretta Target PC, which was x86 PC-based. This also addresses concerns from those who found the previous Diretta Target PC’s PC-based platform unsatisfactory. It is an extremely effective solution for those aiming to upgrade from the USB cable direct connection USBDAC & PC audio style or those interested in Diretta.
What is Diretta Lucia Piccolo?
The Diretta Lucia Piccolo is the latest module dedicated to Diretta (as of November 1, 2021), based on the high-end range Diretta Lucia (adopted by SPEC’s RMP-UB1), and it has been simplified into a single board, including the interface. One point of simplification is the noise countermeasure function around the LAN and USB. This enhancement is intended to be replaced by commercially available third-party external accessories, thus significantly expanding the range of sound tuning possible for users compared to existing models. Together with the reconsideration of key devices, this is a clever approach to achieving low costs.
How To:
The DUB can be connected directly to the audioserver with a LAN-cable or over the network.
- The Canarino DUB comes with three types of feet that allow you to further tune the sound.
- The Canarino DUB is delivered WITHOUT power supply.
- A 5 Volt DC power supply with a 2.5×2.1 mm plug is required. This can be done with a simple 5-volt power adapter, or, for example, with a more luxurious iFi power adapter, a very luxurious Ferrum Hypsos. In other words, choose the power supply of your choice. Bear in mind that upgrading to a better power supply afterwards is always possible. There are plenty of nice 5 volt power supplies on the market. But you should remember: an audio device is only as good as its power supply…
- The Oliospec Canarino DUB consumes little energy, an average of 2 watts. So a power supply that can deliver 1 Ampère is more than sufficient.
Diretta is a new transmission technology that dramatically improves the connection between audio server and DAC. Diretta is the brainchild of Japanese wizard Yu Harada.
The motherboard in the Canarino DUB is the newly developed Diretta Lucia Piccolo. The first product to be equipped with this advanced module.
The latest version is a simplified and basic version of the high-end Diretta Lucia used in SPEC’s RMP-UB1.
The hardware platform is fundamentally different from the previous Diretta Target PC, which was based on an x86 PC. It is also Oliospec’s answer to those annoyed that the previous Diretta Target PC was based on a PC.
Key Features:
- Dedicated Diretta protocol implementation
- Compact and efficient design
- Enhanced audio clarity and detail
- Easy setup and operation
All About the DIRETTA PROTOCOL
Its philosophy is totally different from that of existing protcols.
Many factors affect the sound quality of audio players. Power-supply noises generated by digital blocks on circuits significantly affect the sound quality.Usually, capacitors and inductors are placed at power sources to reduce the noises.
In this way, we can configure low-pass filters and reduce spike-like digital-specific noises.
However, as you can see from the fact that low-pass filters are used, any low-frequency fluctuation passes through. It isn’ t necessary to filter it out because it isn’ t a noise, and you can’ t see it even if you observe it by focusing on voltage.
But, if you observe it by focusing on electrical current, you can detect noises that affect the audio frequency band of a constant cycle. It is absolutely difficult to electrically eliminate the noises.
We thought that we might be able to significantly improve sound quality by controlling these noises. However, it is very difficult and unrealistic to adopt constant current configuration, such as class-A amp, for all CPUs, etc. If we can solve this problem in a software-based approach, we can expect that implementation will be realized. There is only one way to achieve this goal: averaging of processing and reduction of fluctuations in power consumption. But, existing protocols couldn’ t realize it.
By means of Diretta, we would like to propose an answer to this problem. Please suppose that a player with an analog part is the Target and that a server with storage, etc., is the Host. The Target and the Host are designed based on separate concepts. With regard to the Target, processing is minimized and simplified to enable averaging. The Target is configured by means of simple processing, like hardware processing by FPGA.
The Host operates in synchronization with the Target to average processing by the Target. Packets are transmitted as often as possible at constant short intervals in order to average processing. The transmission is controlled by forecasting Target buffers. In this way, fluctuations in power consumption of a player as the Target is averaged as much as possible.
We don’ t say that this method is definitely better than other transmission systems. But, we would like to propose one different approach. It is similar to USB synchronization, but the Target doesnt change speed because the Host synchronizes. There is no buffer/flow control like USB ansynchronization. Completely insulated connection can be used and fibers and other cables can be adopted because it is Ethernet. No complicated processing like UPnP file range requests is required. No complicated processing to synchronize many devices like AES67 is required, either. We are committed to evolving Diretta with the highest priority on sound quality and minimizing influence over analog blocks.
