Description

HiFiMAN HE-R10P Closed-Back Planar Magnetic Headphones

The HiFiMAN HE-R10P is a flagship closed-back planar magnetic headphone designed to combine the speed and low distortion of HIFIMAN planar technology with the isolation, physical bass presence and focused presentation of a sealed wooden enclosure.

Unlike most of HIFIMAN’s reference planar headphones, the HE-R10P uses a fully closed-back acoustic chamber built around large sculpted wooden earcups.

With a frequency response of 10Hz–60kHz, 30Ω impedance and 100dB sensitivity, the HE-R10P is considerably easier to drive than several traditional reference planar headphones while retaining the large diaphragm architecture associated with HIFIMAN’s high-end designs.

A Rare Closed-Back HIFIMAN Flagship

The HiFiMAN HE-R10P occupies an unusual place in the HIFIMAN range.

Most of the company’s reference planar magnetic headphones use an open-back architecture, allowing sound waves to radiate freely from both sides of the diaphragm.

The HE-R10P takes the opposite approach, enclosing the rear of the planar driver inside a substantial wooden acoustic chamber.

This gives the headphone a more isolated and physically grounded presentation while preserving the speed and resolution expected from a large planar magnetic transducer.

Planar Magnetic Driver Technology

At the heart of the HE-R10P is a large planar magnetic driver.

Instead of using a conventional dynamic voice coil attached to a cone or dome, the conductive elements are distributed across a thin diaphragm.

Driving a large surface area in this way allows the diaphragm to respond rapidly and uniformly to the incoming music signal.

The result is low moving mass, fast transient response and strong control across the audible spectrum.

Stealth Magnet Architecture

The current HE-R10P is listed by HIFIMAN as the Planar Version with Stealth Magnets.

Stealth Magnets are shaped to reduce acoustic turbulence and diffraction as sound waves pass through the magnetic structure.

The objective is to minimise interference around the diaphragm so that fine spatial information and transient detail remain intact.

Closed-Back Wooden Acoustic Chambers

The sculpted wooden earcups are one of the defining visual and acoustic features of the HE-R10P.

A closed enclosure changes the way the rear wave of the driver interacts with the headphone compared with an open-back design.

The result is greater isolation, stronger physical bass containment and a more intimate presentation than HIFIMAN’s large open planar headphones.

The wood also gives each headphone a distinctive appearance because natural grain varies from one earcup to another.

Closed-Back without Giving Up Scale

Closed headphones often trade some openness for isolation.

The HE-R10P approaches the problem with a very large internal chamber surrounding the planar driver rather than placing the diaphragm inside a compact sealed cup.

This gives the driver considerably more acoustic volume to work with and helps preserve a sense of scale unusual for a closed-back headphone.

30Ω Impedance and 100dB Sensitivity

The HE-R10P is specified at 30Ω impedance and 100dB sensitivity.

This makes it substantially easier to drive than extreme low-sensitivity planar models such as the SUSVARA.

A high-quality headphone amplifier is still recommended because the HE-R10P is resolving enough to expose differences in source and amplification quality.

However, extreme amplifier power is not required simply to achieve useful listening levels.

10Hz–60kHz Frequency Response

The official frequency response extends from 10Hz to 60kHz.

The combination of a large planar diaphragm and sealed wooden chamber gives the HE-R10P the potential for deep low-frequency extension while maintaining the fast upper-frequency behaviour associated with planar magnetic technology.

Reference Construction and Comfort

The HE-R10P weighs approximately 460g.

Its suspension headband distributes that weight across a broad surface while the deep circumaural ear pads provide the seal required by the closed-back architecture.

The combination of metal, leather-style materials and natural wood gives the HE-R10P a distinctly different visual character from the industrial open-back designs used elsewhere in the HIFIMAN range.

Three Supplied Headphone Cables

The HE-R10P is supplied with three different cable configurations, allowing it to connect directly to a wide range of high-end headphone amplifiers and portable sources.

  • 3m 4-pin XLR balanced cable
  • 3m 6.35mm headphone cable
  • 1.5m 3.5mm headphone cable

The headphone itself uses a 3.5mm TRRS balanced input system.

Sound Philosophy

The HE-R10P is designed for listeners who want the technical advantages of a high-end planar magnetic driver without the acoustic openness and sound leakage of a traditional open-back headphone.

The sealed architecture brings greater bass pressure and a stronger sense of physical weight, while the planar diaphragm maintains fast transient behaviour and low-level resolution.

The result is a presentation that combines precision with density and isolation in a way that is uncommon among flagship planar headphones.

HE-R10P vs HE-R10D

The

HiFiMAN HE-R10D

uses a dynamic driver rather than a planar magnetic transducer.

Both models share the large wooden closed-back concept, but the driver technologies are fundamentally different.

The HE-R10D offers the characteristic physical behaviour of a dynamic driver, while the HE-R10P is designed around the speed, low moving mass and large radiating surface of a planar magnetic diaphragm.

The HE-R10P therefore occupies the flagship position within the HE-R10 family.

HE-R10P vs AUDIVINA

The

HiFiMAN AUDIVINA

is another high-end closed-back planar magnetic headphone from HIFIMAN.

AUDIVINA uses a different acoustic chamber concept inspired by the internal geometry of concert halls and recording spaces.

The HE-R10P instead uses its large sculpted wooden cups to create a more traditional flagship closed-back architecture.

Both provide isolation from the listening environment, but they represent distinctly different interpretations of closed-back planar design.

HE-R10P vs SUSVARA

The

HiFiMAN SUSVARA

is an open-back reference planar headphone with significantly lower sensitivity and much greater amplifier demands.

The HE-R10P offers the practical advantage of a 30Ω, 100dB load and a closed acoustic design.

The SUSVARA is intended for completely open reference listening, while the HE-R10P is the more appropriate choice when isolation and reduced sound leakage are important.

Who Is the HiFiMAN HE-R10P For?

The HiFiMAN HE-R10P is designed for listeners who want a reference-level planar magnetic headphone but cannot use a fully open-back design.

It is particularly relevant for shared listening spaces, late-night listening and systems where isolation from external noise is valuable.

It also makes sense for listeners who prefer the stronger physical bass containment and more intimate acoustic environment associated with a premium closed-back headphone.
