Description
HiFiMAN GA-10 Tube Headphone Amplifier
The HiFiMAN GA-10 is a high-end all-tube headphone amplifier developed as a 10th Anniversary statement product by HIFIMAN’s GoldenWave division.
Using four 12AX7/ECC83 tubes together with four 6P14/EL84 output tubes, the GA-10 follows a deliberately purist analogue philosophy, combining a single-ended amplification architecture with substantial output capability for both high-impedance dynamic headphones and demanding planar magnetic designs.
With balanced XLR and RCA analogue inputs, three headphone outputs, selectable impedance matching and up to 3W into 300Ω, the GA-10 is designed for listeners who want the tonal character of vacuum-tube amplification without sacrificing control, scale or drive.

GoldenWave 10th Anniversary Tube Amplifier
The HiFiMAN GA-10 was created as a 10th Anniversary statement headphone amplifier from GoldenWave.
Rather than combining DAC, streaming and amplification in one chassis, the GA-10 concentrates entirely on analogue headphone amplification.
Its purpose is simple: take a high-quality analogue source and amplify it through a carefully developed vacuum-tube circuit with enough power to drive a wide range of reference headphones.
Eight-Tube Amplification Architecture
The GA-10 uses a total of eight vacuum tubes.
- 4 × 12AX7 / ECC83
- 4 × 6P14 / EL84
The 12AX7/ECC83 tubes are used within the voltage amplification stages, while the EL84-family output tubes provide the power required to drive the headphones.
This gives the GA-10 a fundamentally different operating character from HIFIMAN’s solid-state headphone amplifiers and integrated DAC/amplifier products.
Single-Ended Amplification Structure
Although the GA-10 provides several headphone connection formats, its internal amplifier circuit follows a single-ended amplification architecture.
The different headphone sockets are provided to make connection easier across a wide range of premium headphone cables.
This analogue-first design allows the GA-10 to focus on tube gain, output matching and musical drive rather than digital processing.

Up to 3 Watts into 300 Ohms
One of the most unusual aspects of the GA-10 is its output capability.
The amplifier is specified at up to 3000mW into 300Ω, making it particularly interesting for high-impedance dynamic headphones.
At a 32Ω load, output power is specified at approximately 600mW.
Rather than chasing extremely high wattage into low impedances, the GA-10 has been designed around the operating characteristics of its tube output stage and offers selectable impedance matching for different headphone loads.
High and Low Impedance Matching
A dedicated HIGH / LOW impedance selector is positioned on the front panel.
HIFIMAN recommends the LOW position for headphones with impedance of approximately 32Ω or lower and the HIGH position for headphones above 32Ω.
This allows the amplifier to operate more appropriately with very different headphone loads and gives the listener an additional way to optimise the amplifier-to-headphone interface.

Three Headphone Connections
The front panel provides three different headphone connection formats:
- 4-pin XLR
- 4.4mm
- 6.35mm
This makes the GA-10 easy to integrate with modern high-end headphone cables without requiring an adaptor for every connection type.
The large central volume control uses an ALPS carbon-film potentiometer for precise analogue level adjustment.
Balanced XLR and RCA Analogue Inputs
The rear panel provides both XLR and RCA analogue inputs.
A front-panel input selector allows the listener to switch between the two sources without accessing the rear of the amplifier.
Maximum input level is specified at approximately 3Vrms via RCA and 6Vrms via XLR at Gain 3.
Because the GA-10 is a purely analogue headphone amplifier, it can be partnered with the DAC, phono stage or analogue source of the listener’s choice.
Extremely Low Measured Distortion
Despite its vacuum-tube topology, the GA-10 is specified with exceptionally low distortion.
Official THD+N is approximately 0.001% at 1kHz under the specified measurement conditions.
Its frequency response extends from 20Hz to 24kHz within ±0.5dB.
The design therefore aims to combine the tonal and spatial characteristics associated with valve amplification with modern levels of measured linearity.
Pure Analogue Signal Path
There is no internal DAC, Bluetooth receiver or network streamer inside the GA-10.
For a reference system, this can be an advantage: the owner remains free to select a DAC or analogue source independently and upgrade each component without replacing the amplifier.
The GA-10 therefore fits naturally into a traditional high-end audio chain consisting of source, DAC and dedicated headphone amplifier.

Designed for Serious Headphone Systems
The GA-10 is not designed as a compact portable amplifier.
Its chassis measures approximately 330 × 110 × 380mm, excluding protruding controls and connectors.
The top and side ventilation openings are essential because vacuum tubes and their high-voltage power supplies generate considerably more heat than typical solid-state headphone electronics.
Adequate ventilation around the amplifier is therefore important for both performance and long-term reliability.
Sound Philosophy
The attraction of a high-quality tube amplifier is not simply warmth.
A well-designed valve circuit can provide exceptional dimensionality, harmonic texture and a natural sense of musical flow without deliberately softening detail.
The HiFiMAN GA-10 is designed to combine those qualities with enough control and output capability to work with modern reference headphones.
Its analogue presentation makes it particularly interesting for vocals, acoustic recordings, jazz, classical music and systems where tonal colour and spatial depth are as important as absolute resolution.

GA-10 vs Solid-State Headphone Amplifiers
The GA-10 takes a very different approach from powerful solid-state amplifiers.
A transistor amplifier may provide substantially more raw wattage into low-impedance loads, while the GA-10 concentrates on a tube-based analogue architecture and unusually strong output capability into higher impedances.
Neither approach is universally superior. The correct choice depends on the electrical requirements of the headphone and the sonic character the listener wants from the system.
GA-10 vs HiFiMAN EF600
The
HiFiMAN EF600
is an integrated R2R DAC and solid-state balanced headphone amplifier.
The GA-10 is almost the opposite philosophy: no DAC, no Bluetooth and no digital processing, just a dedicated analogue vacuum-tube headphone amplifier.
The EF600 is ideal for listeners who want an integrated digital system. The GA-10 is aimed at users who already have a high-quality source and want to build the amplification stage independently.
Pairing the GA-10 with HiFiMAN Headphones
The selectable impedance system allows the GA-10 to work with a broad range of headphones, although amplifier matching should always consider both impedance and sensitivity.
For highly demanding low-sensitivity planar models, amplifier requirements should be evaluated individually rather than simply selecting an amplifier by wattage.

Who Is the HiFiMAN GA-10 For?
The HiFiMAN GA-10 is intended for listeners who want to build a serious analogue headphone system around a dedicated vacuum-tube amplifier.
It makes particular sense for users who already own a high-quality DAC and do not want to pay for another digital conversion stage inside their amplifier.
It is also attractive to listeners who value tonal texture, spatial depth and the presentation of a well-designed tube circuit but still require modern headphone connections and substantial drive capability.
