LAiV Harmony DAC 2 Review | HiFi-Advice
LAiV Harmony DAC 2 Review – HiFi-Advice Takes a Closer Listen
The LAiV Harmony DAC 2 has received an in-depth review from HiFi-Advice, where reviewer Christiaan Punter compares the new generation directly with the original Harmony DAC and evaluates its new architecture, features and sonic performance.
The original Harmony DAC quickly became one of LAiV’s most recognized products, and the new Harmony DAC 2 does not attempt to reinvent that successful formula. Instead, it keeps the same fully balanced discrete R2R ladder architecture while improving the surrounding electronics, connectivity and user experience.
LAiV Harmony DAC 2 Review – What Has Changed?
According to HiFi-Advice, the most important upgrades are not inside the core R2R ladder itself, but around it.
- Discrete Class A output buffer
- Concurrent XLR and RCA outputs
- NOS, Oversampling and dedicated Hardware SRC modes
- Direct 10MHz external master clock input
- Full digital isolation between input and output stages
- 12V trigger input and output
- USB-C firmware updates
- New 960 × 400 full-colour display
A New Display and User Interface
One of the most visible upgrades is the new colour TFT display. The original grayscale OLED has been replaced by a much higher-resolution screen with a completely redesigned interface.
HiFi-Advice notes that the graphics are extremely crisp and easy to read. LAiV also provides two display modes: a detailed mode for close-range use and a simplified mode with larger information for normal listening-room distances.
Discrete Class A Output Stage
The Harmony DAC 2 now includes a discrete Class A output buffer with low output impedance. This allows both XLR and RCA outputs to be used simultaneously without the limitations of the original model.
This is especially useful in systems where the DAC needs to feed more than one amplifier, preamplifier or active loudspeaker system.
NOS, Oversampling and Hardware SRC
LAiV has also expanded the digital processing options. The DAC now offers three selectable PCM modes:
- NOS for the most direct signal path
- LAiV Oversampling
- Dedicated Hardware SRC
In the HiFi-Advice review, Christiaan Punter indicates a personal preference for NOS mode, while highlighting the flexibility offered by the additional processing options.
Direct 10MHz Master Clock Input
Another significant improvement is the direct 10MHz external master clock input via 50-ohm BNC.
With the original Harmony DAC, external clocking required the separate LAiV DDC and an I2S connection. The Harmony DAC 2 simplifies this considerably by accepting the clock signal directly.
Full Digital Isolation
The Harmony DAC 2 introduces complete digital isolation between the input and output stages. This helps prevent ground noise, USB bus noise and interference from upstream digital components from reaching the analogue conversion stage.
The goal is a cleaner electrical environment and better preservation of low-level musical information.
Listening Impressions
HiFi-Advice compared the Harmony DAC 2 directly with the original Harmony DAC in two different systems, including a Genelec-based setup and a larger reference system.
The reviewer found that the new model follows the sonic character of the original very closely, but consistently sounds slightly crisper, more direct and more energetic.
The difference was described as meaningful but not dramatic. For owners of the original Harmony DAC, the sonic improvement alone may not necessarily justify an immediate upgrade, but the additional connectivity, clocking, isolation and interface improvements make the DAC 2 a significantly more complete product.
Chameleon Audio View
The LAiV Harmony DAC 2 represents an intelligent evolution rather than a complete redesign. LAiV has preserved the R2R architecture that made the original Harmony successful, while improving the areas that matter most in real-world high-end systems: analogue output drive, digital isolation, clock integration, system control and usability.
For listeners building a new digital front end, the Harmony DAC 2 offers a particularly attractive combination of discrete R2R conversion, flexible digital processing and system integration.
